Payment Options
December 9, 2023 to May 31, 2024
- Pay taxes online (E-check $1.75, credit card 2.45%).
- Pay taxes by phone with live agents at 888-877-0450
- Mail your payment (postmark date is used to determine your payment date)
- Drop your payment in the black Drop Box at the front entrance to the Assessor/Tax Receiver office.
- Pay taxes in person by check, cash, or money order.
Responsibility of Property Owner
The tax laws in Suffolk County state that payment of taxes on a timely basis is the responsibility of the property owner even if a tax bill has not been received. The property owner will be liable for all penalties and interest on late payments.
Payment information for 2023 to 2024
Taxes are payable by check, cash, money order in the exact amount, or credit card payments. Checks will be accepted subject to collection for which this office assumes no responsibility. Please include the payment stub(s) with your remittance and include your phone number.

Online Payments
Online Payments are available from December 9 to May 31.
- Credit/debit cards will not be accepted at the office.
- E-check ($1.75 flat fee) or credit/debit card (2.45% fee).
- Service fees are collected by the payment processor, not the Town of Shelter Island.
First Half Payment
The Assessment Roll of the Town of Shelter Island, County of Suffolk for 2022/2023 upon which this assessment appears, will be delivered on or about December 7, 2023. Taxes are due December 31, 2023, 1st half is payable until and including January 10, 2024 without penalty.
Schedule of Penalty 1st Half Tax Only
- December 1 to January 10 - No penalty
- January 11 to February 10 - 1% penalty
- February 11 to March 10 - 2% penalty
- March 11 to April 10 - 3% penalty
- April 11 to May 10 - 4% penalty
- May 11 to May 31 - 5% penalty
Second Half Payment
The second half is to be paid without penalty until May 31, 2024. After this date, all payments must be paid to:

A penalty of 5% on total unpaid tax and interest at the rate of 1% per month or part thereof from February 1. A $20 tax sale advertising charge per item will be included after August 31.
- Payments by Mail: If taxes are paid by mail, pursuant to Real Property Tax Law 925, you will avoid penalty and interest charges if the payment envelope bears proper postage and an official post office date stamp (a private meter stamp is not acceptable) dated no later than the last due date. If no date stamp is indicated on the envelope, by statute, the date received is the date paid. No cash by mail.
- Returned Check Charge: Taxes paid by check or other written orders are subject to collection. A charge of $20 will be added to any account where a tendered payment was by check or other written order and was returned for insufficient funds. Returned checks or orders will automatically cancel your tax payment and will not necessarily be redeposited.
- Partial Payments: A partial payment of real property taxes will be accepted in accordance with Suffolk County Resolution Number 551-2002. However, if the full first half is not received by January 10, 2023, the appropriate penalty will be charged on the unpaid balance of the first half only.
- New Owner Information: Please note, the Tax Receiver's Office cannot make new owner name changes until the Assessor's Office has received the deed change from Suffolk County.
- Tax year: Town, County and School taxes in Suffolk County cover the period from December 1st to November 30th of the following year.
- School Taxes: School budgets are set by your local school districts. Every year you have the opportunity to vote on the school budget. This determines the amount of taxes you will be paying for schools in your district.
- County Taxes: County taxes are set by a county budget, approved by
- Town Taxes: Town taxes are set by a town budget, approved by the Town Supervisor and the Town Board.
